If
the program is not already a medical facility, it will need to subscribe
to a local "medical waste disposal" service. Such services generally
charge an affordable monthly fee to maintain an on-site medical waste container
for used needles and contaminated cotton and gloves. Guidelines for using
such containers are established by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational
Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and will be provided by the container
supplier. Needle safety is also outlined in detail in the book Transformation
and Recovery and in the NADA
Training, and should be posted in the clinic for clients to read.
Cleaning (autoclaving) and
re-using needles is not practical or cost-effective given the low price
of disposable auricular (ear) needles when purchased in bulk.
